The government for the for the Detroit Metro areas has multiple components, include U.S. Federal, Michigan State, City of Detroit and local, suburban community governments.

Elections in Detroit are in August and November of every 4n+1 year (e.g. 2005) and are nonpartisan. The nine-member city council is elected at large.

The Detroit school district is geographically identical to the City of Detroit. It has been in a struggle to maintain its autonomy as a representative democratic institution.
